Phase 2: It is a 1-to-3 course. The main focus of the course is building comprehension skills, building understanding of English literature in various forms and learning how to answer a variety of different questions. It will focus primarily on reading and understanding a variety of literature, selecting ideas and information from the text and presenting it in a variety of forms The course includes areas designed to build a student’s confidence, ways to improve their comprehension skills in all areas and lots of hints and tips for how to boost their mark in an exam situation. We also factor in past papers from a variety of well-known independent schools to prepare the students for the range of exams that they may take. Students to do The Perse School 13+ before the first session. Session 1: Multiple Choice Questions – The Perse School 13+. Strategies and approaches. Discussion of choice of schools. HW: Aldenham School 13+ (2) Session 2: Effects of Language - Aldenham School 13+ (2). Focus on analysing language and discussing the effect. HW: Alleyn’s School 13+ (2) Session 3: Synonyms – Alleyn’s School 13+ (2). Focus on the meanings of words and synonyms. HW: Dulwich College 13+ (5) -FIRST SIX QUESTIONS ONLY! Session 4: Long and detailed questions – Dulwich College 13+ (5) -FIRST SIX QUESTIONS ONLY! A focus on answering the longer and more complicated questions. HW: Bedford College 13+ (1) Session 5: Analysing poems - Bedford College 13+ (1). An introduction to how to analyse a poem. HW: Dulwich College 13+ (3) – make sure you do Q8 Session 6: Recreative writing – Dulwich College 13+ (3) – Q8. A focus on writing in the same style of the author. HW: Dulwich College 13+ (2) Session 7: Story continuation – Dulwich College 13+ (2). A focus on continuing a story in a realistic manner. HW: Colfe’s School 13+ Session 8: Defining meanings – Colfe’s School 13+. A focus on the meanings of words. HW: Sevenoaks School 13+ 2012 Session 9: Compare and contrast questions – Sevenoaks School 13+ 2012. A focus on comparison and contrast between two extracts.
