PHASE 2 – Descriptive Writing 1 teacher-to-3 students Course Overview This course builds high-level descriptive writing aligned with GCSE assessment objectives. Students learn structural clarity (Zoom and Time methods), lexical precision and tonal consistency. Emphasis is on subtlety, coherence and exam readiness Session 1 – Simile & Metaphor Objective: Apply figurative language selectively. Students refine imagery and avoid over-decoration. Homework: Improve descriptive extract. Session 2 – Personification & Sound Imagery Objective: Enhance atmosphere through controlled environmental detail. Homework: 250-word mood-based description. Session 3 – Zoom Method Objective: Structure description from wide perspective to focused detail. Students practise macro-to-micro progression. Homework: Complete zoom-structured piece. Session 4 – Time Method Objective: Structure description across time progression. Maintain tonal consistency across shifts (day/night, before/after). Homework: 300-word time-based description. Session 5 – Describing Setting Objective: Create immersive atmosphere through selective detail. Avoid narrative drift; focus on implication. Homework: Refine setting paragraph. Session 6 – Describing Character Objective: Portray character through subtle physical detail. Avoid direct emotional explanation. Homework: Character portrait implying hidden tension. Session 7 – Varying Sentence Structure Objective: Control rhythm and flow in description. Experiment with sentence length and clause placement. Homework: Rewrite for improved rhythm. Session 8 – Vocabulary Building Objective: Develop ambitious and precise vocabulary. Build semantic fields (light, decay, silence, cold, etc.). Homework: Create personal vocabulary bank. Session 9 – Pathetic Fallacy Objective: Use environmental symbolism subtly and effectively. Refine exaggerated examples and practise restraint. Homework: Two contrasting tonal descriptions. Session 10 – Final Assessment Objective: Produce a 45–60 minute descriptive response under exam conditions. Feedback on structure, vocabulary, tone and control. Homework: Redraft and refine.
