PHASE 2 – Descriptive Writing Class Size: 1:3 Course Overview This course teaches pupils how to describe places and people clearly and creatively using sensory detail. Focus: Using the five senses Strong adjectives Colour vocabulary Clear paragraph structure Lesson Breakdown Lesson 1 – Similes in Description Use simple similes in description. Homework: Describe your bedroom using 3 similes. Lesson 2 – Personification Make nature “come alive.” Homework: Describe a storm using personification. Lesson 3 – Zoom Method (Big to Small) Describe from far away to close up. Homework: Describe a playground using zoom. Lesson 4 – Time Method (Morning to Night) Describe the same place at different times. Homework: Morning vs night description. Lesson 5 – Describing Setting Focus on senses. Homework: Sensory paragraph. Lesson 6 – Describing Character Appearance + feelings. Homework: Describe a pirate. Lesson 7 – Sentence Starters Avoid starting every sentence the same way. Homework: Rewrite paragraph with 4 different starters. Lesson 8 – Colours & Interesting Words Move beyond “red” and “blue.” Homework: Create a colour word bank. Lesson 9 – Weather & Feelings (Simple Pathetic Fallacy) Link weather to mood. Homework: Happy day vs sad day paragraph. Lesson 10 – Final Description Assessment Independent descriptive piece.
