The following tasks will expose students to a range of keys skills required in non-fiction writing: writing an article, report, essay, guide, speech. We will focus on how to structure these tasks and how to adopt the correct register, tone and vocabulary is each case. 1 Writing an article and a guide: ‘How students can manage their parents.’ Humorous writing to advise in the form of a guide. 2 Speech. ‘How students can ensure they spend their summer holidays productively.’ Writing to explain to an audience of fellow-students. 3 Factual writing/writing to explain/Personal writing. Writing about a busy train station you know about. 4. Speculative writing. Describing what the future might look like. How to conjecture possible futures based on current trends. 5 Writing a letter: Write a letter to your head teacher explaining how the school could be improved. 6 Giving an opinion/persuasive writing: speech or article: ‘School uniforms belong in the past’. Arguments and counter-arguments. 7. An essay defending or attacking the existence of zoos: writing to persuade; giving an opinion: ‘Zoos are cruel and have no place in the world.’ Building an argument and incorporating personal experience. 8. Personal writing. Describing a time when you have been afraid. 9 : Travel writing: 10. ‘In the age of the internet, we no longer need public libraries.’ Write an essay about whether we still need public libraries. 11. Optional extra: ‘The first five things I would tell an alien.’
