PHASE 2 – Descriptive Writing Class Size: 1:3 This course develops precision and sophistication in descriptive writing for 13+ exams. Students focus on structural clarity (Zoom and Time methods), lexical precision, subtle imagery and tonal consistency. Emphasis is placed on restraint, coherence and exam readiness. Session 1 – Simile & Metaphor (Controlled Use) Objective: Use comparisons selectively and effectively. Content: Analyse model descriptions; refine weak imagery; write focused descriptive paragraph. Homework: Improve descriptive extract. Session 2 – Personification & Sound Imagery Objective: Enhance atmosphere through subtle personification. Content: Compare refined vs exaggerated examples; create two mood variations. Homework: Storm or tension-based description. Session 3 – Zoom Method Objective: Structure description from wide to detailed focus. Content: Study macro-to-micro structure; plan and draft zoom description. Homework: Complete full zoom piece. Session 4 – Time Method Objective: Structure description across time progression. Content: Morning–evening or before–after structure; maintain tone through change. Homework: 250-word time-based description. Session 5 – Describing Setting Objective: Build immersive atmosphere using layered sensory detail. Content: Avoid narrative drift; select precise details; practise implication. Homework: Refine setting paragraph. Session 6 – Describing Character Objective: Reveal personality indirectly. Content: Focus on gesture, posture, expression; avoid stating emotions directly. Homework: Character portrait implying hidden emotion. Session 7 – Sentence Structure & Rhythm Objective: Control syntax for flow and impact. Content: Experiment with short/long sentences; improve paragraph rhythm. Homework: Rewrite flat description with varied syntax. Session 8 – Vocabulary & Semantic Fields Objective: Use precise vocabulary linked to tone. Content: Replace vague adjectives; build lexical sets (light, decay, silence, cold). Homework: Create personal vocabulary bank. Session 9 – Pathetic Fallacy (Advanced) Objective: Use environment symbolically without cliché. Content: Refine exaggerated examples; write subtle mood-based setting. Homework: Two contrasting tonal descriptions. Session 10 – Final Assessment Objective: Produce 45-minute exam-style descriptive response. Content: Timed task + individual feedback on imagery, structure and tone. Homework: Redraft for improvement.
