PHASE 2 – Descriptive Writing Class Size: 1:3 Course Overview This course builds precision in descriptive writing for 11+ exams. Students learn how to: Structure description using clear methods Use ambitious vocabulary Develop tone and atmosphere Write descriptively without drifting into narrative Manage time effectively Lesson Breakdown Lesson 1 – Similes & Metaphors in Description Focus on enhancing description, not storytelling. Homework: Describe a marketplace using 3 comparisons. Lesson 2 – Personification & Sound Imagery Focus on bringing scenes to life. Homework: Describe a storm scene using sensory detail. Lesson 3 – Zoom Method (Wide to Close Detail) Learn to move from landscape → specific detail. Homework: Describe a beach using zoom structure. Lesson 4 – Time Method (Shifting Through Time) Morning → afternoon → evening progression. Homework: Describe the same street at two times of day. Lesson 5 – Describing Setting with 5 Senses Deep sensory layering. Homework: Sensory paragraph (no narrative allowed). Lesson 6 – Describing Character in Detail Appearance + behaviour + small gestures. Homework: Write a vivid character description. Lesson 7 – Sentence Variety & Paragraph Flow Link ideas smoothly. Homework: Improve cohesion in given text. Lesson 8 – Advanced Colour Vocabulary Move beyond “blue/red” → sapphire, crimson, ashen, etc. Homework: Create personal vocabulary bank. Lesson 9 – Pathetic Fallacy (Controlled Use) Link weather subtly to emotion. Homework: Write two versions of same setting (happy vs tense). Lesson 10 – Final Timed Descriptive Assessment 30-minute descriptive response + feedback. Homework: Structured redraft.
