PHASE 1 – Narrative Writing 1 teacher-to-4 students Course Overview This course develops controlled, sophisticated narrative writing suitable for GCSE-style exams and competitive school assessments. Students focus on structural control, precision of vocabulary, varied sentence construction and deliberate use of figurative language. Timed writing and exam strategies are embedded throughout. Session 1 – Simile & Metaphor Objective: Use figurative language precisely and avoid cliché. Students analyse model responses and refine weak comparisons into controlled imagery. Homework: Rewrite a basic paragraph improving imagery. Session 2 – Personification & Sound Imagery Objective: Use figurative devices to enhance tone subtly. Students practise atmosphere-driven writing with restraint. Homework: 250-word descriptive opening. Session 3 – Planning & Structure Objective: Plan and structure a narrative effectively. Explore linear, cyclical and flashback structures; practise timed planning. Homework: Detailed narrative plan from exam prompt. Session 4 – Writing the Opening Objective: Craft an engaging first paragraph. Focus on narrative voice, perspective and tone establishment. Homework: Redraft opening. Session 5 – Writing the Main Body Objective: Develop tension and pacing. Students manipulate paragraph length and build logical progression. Homework: Expand main body section. Session 6 – Writing the Ending Objective: Create reflective, cyclical or ambiguous endings. Students compare effective and abrupt conclusions. Homework: Write two alternative endings. Session 7 – Varying Sentence Structure Objective: Control syntax for rhythm and emphasis. Use embedded clauses, short impact sentences and varied openings. Homework: Improve a flat narrative extract. Session 8 – Creating Character Objective: Develop multi-dimensional characters. Focus on indirect characterisation through action and dialogue. Homework: Character-based scene. Session 9 – Mood & Atmosphere Objective: Sustain tone and psychological tension. Students use setting and subtle symbolism to build drama. Homework: 45-minute timed practice. Session 10 – Final Assessment Objective: Produce a 45–60 minute narrative under exam conditions. Structured feedback on structure, vocabulary and control. Homework: Redraft weakest section.
