PHASE 1 – Narrative Writing Class Size: 1:3 Course Overview This course helps young writers tell exciting stories with clear beginnings, middles and endings. Pupils will learn how to make their writing more interesting using describing words, simple figurative language and different sentence starters. The focus is on: Confidence in storytelling Clear story structure Basic figurative language Writing in full sentences Using exciting vocabulary Lesson Breakdown Lesson 1 – Similes & Describing Words Objective: Use simple similes (e.g. “as fast as a cheetah”) Homework: Write 5 similes about animals. Lesson 2 – Personification & Sound Words Objective: Use basic personification (“The wind whispered”) and onomatopoeia. Homework: Write a short paragraph using at least 2 sound words. Lesson 3 – Story Planning (Beginning, Middle, End) Objective: Plan a simple 3-part story using a storyboard. Homework: Plan your own adventure story. Lesson 4 – Writing a Strong Opening Objective: Write an interesting first paragraph that introduces setting and character. Homework: Improve your opening with 3 describing words. Lesson 5 – Writing the Middle (Problem) Objective: Introduce a problem or challenge clearly. Homework: Add dialogue to your middle section. Lesson 6 – Writing the Ending (Solution) Objective: Solve the problem clearly and neatly. Homework: Rewrite your ending in your neatest handwriting. Lesson 7 – Sentence Variety (Because, And, But) Objective: Join sentences using conjunctions. Homework: Turn 5 short sentences into longer ones. Lesson 8 – Creating a Character Objective: Describe appearance and personality. Homework: Draw and describe your hero. Lesson 9 – Creating Mood Objective: Use weather and describing words to show feelings. Homework: Write a “scary forest” paragraph. Lesson 10 – Final Story Writing Objective: Write a full short story independently. Homework: Revise favourite techniques.
