PHASE 1 – Narrative Writing Class Size: 1:3 Course Overview This course prepares students for competitive 13+ entrance exams. The focus is on structured storytelling, controlled figurative language, sentence variety and sustained atmosphere. Students learn to plan effectively, manipulate pacing and write confidently under timed conditions using model responses from independent school papers. Session 1 – Simile & Metaphor Objective: Use figurative language precisely, avoiding cliché. Content: Analyse strong vs weak imagery; rewrite basic comparisons Homework: Improve a simple paragraph using controlled imagery. Session 2 – Personification & Sound Imagery Objective: Use figurative devices to enhance mood subtly. Content: Compare exaggerated vs refined examples; write contrasting mood paragraphs. Homework: 200-word atmospheric scene. Session 3 – Planning & Structure Objective: Plan a coherent narrative arc. Content: Study 5-part structure; explore linear vs flashback options. Homework: Complete structured story plan. Session 4 – Writing the Opening Objective: Craft engaging openings (in medias res, dialogue, or mystery). Content: Analyse model openings; write and refine first paragraph. Homework: Redraft opening after feedback. Session 5 – Developing the Main Body Objective: Build tension and logical progression. Content: Explore pacing; vary paragraph length; write rising action scene. Homework: Expand main body section. Session 6 – Writing Effective Endings Objective: Create satisfying, reflective or cyclical endings. Content: Compare abrupt vs controlled endings; practise alternative conclusions. Homework: Write two contrasting endings. Session 7 – Sentence Variety & Control Objective: Manipulate sentence length for effect. Content: Use embedded clauses, short impact sentences, varied openings. Homework: Rewrite given passage with structural control. Session 8 – Characterisation Objective: Create multi-dimensional characters. Content: Show character through action, gesture and dialogue; avoid direct explanation. Homework: Write character-focused scene. Session 9 – Mood & Atmosphere Objective: Sustain tone consistently. Content: Use setting and imagery to reflect psychological tension; avoid over-description. Homework: 20-minute timed atmospheric paragraph. Session 10 – Final Assessment Objective: Demonstrate full narrative control in 45-minute exam task. Content: Timed writing + structured feedback. Homework: Redraft weakest section.
