Phase 2 Class size: 1 teacher to 3 students Phase 2 builds on Phase 1 with greater emphasis on independent exam performance. Students work with literary fiction, autobiography, travel writing, journalism and historical non-fiction. Students develop confidence with unfamiliar texts, language and structure analysis, writers’ viewpoints and comparison. Teacher support is gradually reduced as students practise producing detailed responses within exam timings. Past-paper questions, mark schemes and exam-style tasks are used throughout. Hour 1: City of Beasts Analyse how character, setting and atmosphere are established. Select precise evidence and explore language effects. Homework: Exam-style language analysis. Hour 2: A Sound of Thunder Explore how language and structure create tension and suspense through imagery, sentence choices, focus and pace. Homework: Analytical response on tension. Hour 3: The Silk Factory – Mystery Develop inference and close reading. Analyse how information is revealed and withheld to create uncertainty. Homework: Structure or language question. Hour 4: Half of a Yellow Sun Explore characterisation, setting and narrative perspective, focusing on emotions, relationships and experience. Homework: Extended analytical response. Hour 5: Joe Simpson Analyse autobiographical writing, focusing on narrative voice, tension, experience and selection of detail. Homework: Exam-style analysis of writer’s methods. Hour 6: Cycling Develop non-fiction comprehension and viewpoint analysis through tone, vocabulary and rhetorical techniques. Homework: Viewpoint analysis response. Hour 7: Ben Fogle Analyse travel and autobiographical writing, focusing on perspective, description and reader engagement. Homework: Timed analysis question. Hour 8: Aberfan Explore how serious real-life events are presented through tone, imagery, factual detail and perspective. Homework: Analytical response using evidence. Hour 9: Trains Develop comparison and synthesis skills by identifying key ideas and comparing writers’ experiences and perspectives. Homework: Timed comparison question. Hour 10: Shooting an Elephant Consolidate viewpoint, tone, language, structure and internal conflict through timed exam practice and feedback. Homework: Review Phase 2 skills and individual targets.
