Service Description

Phase 1: Class size: 3 students This IB MYP English course develops students' critical reading, analytical writing, communication and presentation skills in line with the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme. Through novels, poetry, speeches and non-fiction texts, students explore how language expresses identity, communicates ideas and influences society. Students will learn to analyse writers' choices, interpret literary techniques, construct well-organised analytical and persuasive writing, and present ideas confidently. The course also develops ATL skills, including communication, critical thinking, research and self-management, while preparing students for the four MYP English assessment criteria: Analysing, Organising, Producing Text and Using Language. Course Outline Lesson 1: Introduction to the Unit Understand the Statement of Inquiry, Global Context and key concepts. Complete a diagnostic reading and writing task. Explore how writers express identity. Lesson 2: Writer's Voice Identify tone, purpose and audience. Analyse literary devices and annotate texts effectively. Lesson 3: Character and Identity Examine characterisation techniques. Analyse how identity is presented through characters. Develop written analytical responses. Lesson 4: Language Choices Explore imagery, symbolism and figurative language. Evaluate how authors create meaning through language choices. Lesson 5: Persuasive Language Investigate rhetorical devices and persuasive techniques. Compare viewpoints in speeches and opinion texts. Lesson 6: Planning Effective Writing Plan analytical and persuasive essays. Develop strong thesis statements and organise supporting evidence. Lesson 7: Drafting and Improving Writing Produce a first draft. Participate in peer review. Edit and refine writing using IB MYP assessment criteria. Lesson 8: Speaking and Listening Prepare and deliver a presentation or speech. Use textual evidence to support ideas and build confidence in public speaking. Lesson 9: Assessment Preparation Review key literary concepts and writing skills. Practise applying MYP assessment criteria. Strengthen analytical writing and language accuracy. Lesson 10: Final Assessment and Reflection Complete the summative assessment. Reflect on progress and ATL skill development. Set learning targets for future English study.
