Phase 1: Class size: 3 students This course develops the main creative and transactional writing skills required for GCSE English Language. Students will practise writing descriptions, stories, articles, speeches and letters, supported by model answers demonstrating the highest levels of attainment. Students will develop effective metaphors and similes, “show, don’t tell”, ambitious vocabulary, flashbacks, argument structure and the correct tone and format for different writing tasks. The SOW is a general overview and may be adapted to students’ needs and academic level. Students may not use AI or translation devices to create their work. Homework should be submitted in the following lesson and will be reviewed in class. Lessons 1 & 2: Description & Story Openings Explore GCSE mark schemes and effective descriptive and narrative openings. Develop descriptions of people and places through atmosphere, zooming in, sentence variety and sophisticated vocabulary rather than relying on plot. HW 1: Describe people using “show, don’t tell”. HW 2: Create an effective story opening. Lesson 3: Creating Atmosphere Through Detail Use carefully selected details, vocabulary and imagery to establish a particular mood. HW: Complete a detailed description or story opening. Lesson 4: Picture Questions Learn how to generate ideas from visual prompts and develop them into effective stories or descriptions. HW: Describe a powerful person from a picture prompt. Lesson 5: Buildings & Interiors Describe buildings, rooms and interiors using detail, weather and pathetic fallacy to create mood and atmosphere. HW: Complete an interior description or story set in a particular place. Lesson 6: Describing an Animal Create a vivid description of a real or imaginary animal using an exam-style task. HW: Complete the classroom task. Lesson 7: Dystopia & Utopia Develop imaginative fantasy writing by creating convincing dystopian and utopian worlds. HW: Complete the classroom task. Lesson 8: Transactional Writing – Article Learn the appropriate structure, tone, format and language for an effective GCSE article. HW: Complete the classroom task. Lesson 9: Transactional Writing – Speech Develop persuasive speech writing, focusing on audience, purpose, structure and rhetorical techniques. HW: Complete the classroom task. Lesson 10: Persuasive Letter Plan and write a persuasive letter using appropriate format, tone, structured arguments and convincing supporting detail.
