Phase 1: Class size: 1 teacher to 3 students Exam Boards: AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas This course develops the essential comprehension, analytical and writing skills required for GCSE English Language. Lessons use extracts and materials recommended by different examination boards and are adapted to students’ individual levels and exam requirements. Students develop skills in close reading, inference, writers’ methods, language and structure analysis, comparison, viewpoints and accurate written responses. The sequence and focus may be adjusted according to students’ ability and exam board. Lessons 1 & 2: PEED, PEDAL & PETAL Learn to structure analytical responses using Point, Evidence, Technique, Analyse and Link. Explore topic sentences, supporting points, conclusions and linking devices. HW: Analyse “Jasmine”; compare Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull using PETAL. Lesson 3: Writers’ Viewpoint & Attitude Compare viewpoints and explore direct address, rhetorical questions, opinion presented as fact and expert opinion. Develop understanding of argument, persuasion and advice. HW: Compare two short extracts. Lesson 4: 19th-Century Texts Explore class, social attitudes, elevated language and rhetoric through historical texts, including persuasive letters and speeches. HW: Complete classroom tasks. Lesson 5: Tone, Style & Register Identify tone and purpose in texts written to explain, inform, persuade or convey emotion. HW: Answer questions on an extract from Kes. Lesson 6: Words & Phrases Analyse metaphor, simile, analogy, alliteration, onomatopoeia, antithesis, parenthesis and hyperbole, alongside rhetoric and bias. HW: Complete classroom task. Lesson 7: Description & Narrative Viewpoint Explore first, second and third person and indirect free discourse. Analyse description, viewpoint and mood using “The Old Railway Station” and Dickens’ Great Expectations. HW: Analyse Howard at a party. Lesson 8: Structure Analyse non-linear writing, cinematic techniques and perspective shifts using selected passages. HW: Structural analysis of a passage. Lesson 9: Sentence Forms Explore simple, compound and complex sentences, fragments and interrogatives, and their effects. HW: Analyse Rosabel for form, structure and sentence types; read Don’t Ask Jack and review unfamiliar vocabulary. Lesson 10: Whole Paper – Don’t Ask Jack (AQA) Apply the course skills to a complete paper, working through the questions and discussing effective examination approaches.
