Geography
Education background highlights: UCL MSc in Environment, Politics and Environment (Merit) and BA First Class Honours in Philosophy (also from UCL).
Brief self-introduction: Formerly an energy and sustainability consultant in real estate, so I have experience with the practical application of studying geography in the corporate world. Experience volunteering as a tutor in marginalised communities
Tutor's skills: I like to identify areas of weakness and strengths with the student. I think it is important to still continue to work on areas of strength alongside topics they struggle with so these areas don’t get ignored and consequently start to slip and so that the student doesn’t feel despondent only working on things they struggle with.
Teaching style: My teaching style is one that starts from a place of encouragement, where the student should feel comfortable to ask questions and say if they don’t understand something. I myself had tutors for several years whilst studying, so I know what approaches worked for me and what didn’t, so I like to take what worked well for me and apply it with my students. I think striking a mixture of content knowledge whilst also having a focus on exam technique works best within lessons- getting used to implementing said knowledge in a way that equates success in exams is best to start as early as possible. Geography is fascinating and interwoven into so many areas of our lives, so creating a genuine interest in the subject is also something I would endeavour to do.
