Sociology, politics & English
Education background highlights: Top of year in the social science department of Bristol University; 1st class degree in Politics & Sociology from the University of Bristol.
Brief self-introduction: Mentor and tutor since graduating university in 2020. I've worked one to one with students from primary/prep to undergrad as well as in schools across the UK.
Tutor's skills: My main areas of expertise is firstly in exam and essay writing skills; guiding students in their social sciences exam preparation and essay writing, particularly helping students come up with original arguments. Secondly, my background in screenwriting and creative writing tutoring has afforded me skills in tutoring all ages in various forms of creative work.
Teaching style: My teaching style is about being as non-school teacher in approach as possible. I find the best way to empower a student is to present myself as a work buddy to help them come up with exciting and efficient ways to tackle areas of work they are finding hard. When a student feels confidence and a degree of agency over an exam or essay, rather than feeling like its a big scary 'thing' to get 'right', is when I notice students working best. Rather than overwhelming a student with whats right or wrong, I let their knowledge and ideas lead sessions, from which I can help develop and improve. This is crucial to empowering students to feel they are not inherently 'bad' at a subject, that they're already starting with a lot of skill - that they are capable. When approaching essay planning, I work to equip students not only with ways to plan thoroughly but to understand why they need to plan thoroughly, why they need to set up very clear, exemplified arguments.
