Service Description

Phase 1: It is a 1-to-3 course. Phase 1. The main focus of the course is learning how to write fluently and effectively in English with varied sentence structure, ambitious vocabulary and a variety of figurative language. The course includes areas designed to build a student’s confidence, ways to improve their writing in terms of sentence structure, vocabulary and figurative language, and lots of hints and tips for how to boost their mark in an exam situation. We also factor in past papers from a variety of well-known independent schools to prepare the students for the range of exams that they may take. PHASE ONE – Description and Accuracy 1. Unlocking settings – the five senses HOMEWORK: Using the bullet points you made in class, please write me a sensory description of your outdoor setting. 2. Introducing emotion to settings – emotional adjectives, synonyms and alliteration HOMEWORK: Think of a perilous setting. Please write a description of it, implying that the area is highly dangerous without explicitly saying so. 3.Characters – similes and metaphors HOMEWORK: Please write two or three paragraphs which describe your own extreme character. Please use as many metaphors and similes as possible! 4. Writing accurately (1) – reviewing common errors in descriptive writing HOMEWORK: Students should correct these grammar errors and then review their own homework tasks. 5. Writing accurately (2) – introducing proofreading HOMEWORK: This midway proofreading session is a good opportunity for students to revise what has been learned so far 6. Considering the reader – small details HOMEWORK: Choose a picture yourself, and focus on one tiny element of it. Use this to foreground a whole descriptive passage of about two paragraphs. 7. Playing with and manipulating descriptive fiction writing – genre HOMEWORK: Students will be given a random genre to write in descriptively. This will be completed for homework if necessary. 8.Built and natural environments – personification and extended metaphor HOMEWORK: Please think of either a huge city or a wild forest. Please write three paragraphs describing this setting, using everything we have discussed so far, with a particular emphasis on personification. 9.Coming up with ideas – style and creativity HOMEWORK: Taking one of the titles given in the lesson, please write a description in a genre of your choice. 10. Putting it all together – planning and executing accurate descriptive writing to time
