PHASE 1 – Narrative Writing Class Size: 1:3 Course Overview This course develops structured, engaging narrative writing suitable for competitive 11+ entrance exams. Students will learn to: Plan effectively using story structure models Develop tension and conflict Write varied and controlled sentences Use figurative language purposefully Build believable characters Write under timed conditions We incorporate 11+ style prompts from independent schools and practise exam timing. Lesson Breakdown Lesson 1 – Similes & Metaphors with Control In Class: Analyse model paragraph Write a descriptive opening using 3 controlled comparisons Homework: Improve a basic paragraph by adding 3 effective similes/metaphors. Lesson 2 – Personification & Onomatopoeia for Atmosphere In Class: Compare calm vs storm description Write a short storm scene Homework: Write a paragraph describing a setting change using personification. Lesson 3 – Planning Using the 5-Part Story Mountain In Class: Break down model 11+ story Plan a story using structured template Homework: Create a detailed story plan from a past-paper style prompt. Lesson 4 – Writing an Engaging Opening In Class: Study 3 opening styles Write and peer-review first paragraphs Homework: Rewrite opening after feedback. Lesson 5 – Developing the Main Body & Building Tension In Class: Slow vs fast pacing Write rising action paragraph Homework: Write a 2-paragraph build-up scene. Lesson 6 – Crafting Effective Endings In Class: Analyse weak vs strong endings Practise reflective and circular endings Homework: Write two alternative endings. Lesson 7 – Sentence Variety & Control In Class: Improve repetitive sentences Create impact through sentence length Homework: Rewrite a paragraph with varied structures. Lesson 8 – Creating Character Through Action & Dialogue In Class: “Show not tell” exercise Write a dialogue scene Homework: Character profile + 1 action-based paragraph. Lesson 9 – Creating Mood, Atmosphere & Drama In Class: Dark forest / abandoned house writing task Homework: Write a full atmospheric paragraph under 20-minute time limit. Lesson 10 – Final Timed Assessment In Class: Full timed writing + structured feedback. Homework: Redraft weakest section.
