GCSE English Literature: Unseen Poems & Prose (Ages 13-15) Phase 1 It is a 1-to-4 course. This course prepares students for unseen poetry and prose in GCSE English Literature. Students will analyse poems, novel extracts, autobiographies, and journalism, developing skills in: Decoding unfamiliar vocabulary Identifying literary techniques and tone Using the PETER method (Point, Evidence, Terminology, Explanation, Relate to question/context) Comparing texts and making inferences Selecting precise quotations By the end, students will confidently approach unseen texts, improving critical thinking and analytical writing. Lesson 1: SATS 1000 most complex words. Extracts from The Great Gatsby and Mountains of the Mind (R MacFarlane) Lesson objective: Understanding exam assessment objectives. Decoding tricky vocabulary from roots words and contexts. Lesson 2: Contrasting texts: openings of 1984, The Hunger Games and Brave New World. Dystopian fiction Lesson objective: Selecting quotes. Exploring implicit and explicit meanings. Lesson 3: Of Mice and Men passage. List of useful connectives. Passage from The Catcher in the Rye. Lesson objective: Identifying tone and context Lesson 4: Extracts from My Life by Bill Clinton, and Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris. A Walk in The Woods by Bill Bryson Lesson objective: Unseen autobiographical fiction and humorous writing Lesson 5: Unseen poetry. AQA unseen: ‘Shoulders’ and ‘Choices’ Lesson objective: Analysing structure, syntax, lexis, titles, form and structure. How to compare/contrast Lesson 6: ‘A London Thoroughfare’ and ‘November Night, Edinburgh.’ Lesson objective: Analysing tone and authorial perspective. Lesson 7: Board/Eduqas ‘Home’ and ‘Coming Home’ Lesson objective: Contrasting settings and POV Lesson 8: ‘Apartment Neighbours’ and ‘On Turning Ten’ Lesson objective: Close focus on a single poem. Imagery and implicit meanings Lesson 9: ‘Walking Away’ and ‘Catrin’ Writing about human relationships Lesson objective: Comparing attitudes to relationships in the two poems Lesson 10: Power Failure Lesson objective: Close focus on language and form
