Phase 1: It is a 1-to-4 class. Creative Writing Phase 1 – Focus on Narratives These lessons will have narrative (story telling ) as their main focus but will, of course feature using ambitious language as well. There will be vocabulary builder sessions in every lesson and exposure to passages from great literature for young people in most lessons. These will largely be taken from past entrance exams where the Creative section has been linked in some way to the passage. There will be homework set and marked each week so that the students can see their own progress. There will be homework after each lesson. 1 Intro – why you need to learn to write a concise and believable story In 300- 400 words. What marker love and what they really dislike. 2 Figurative writing. Simile and metaphor. Why they are effective and help the plot Personification, onomatopoeia 3 Planning and Using Narrative Structure – five paragraphs or similar. 4 Getting the first paragraph right. Using a “catch” to attract attention. Flashback technique as a narrative tool. Rapid development of a character or place or situation. 5 The main body of the story. Decisions, problems and plot twists, climaxes. 6 Great endings. Use and misuse of cliff hangers. Endings to avoid if possible! 7 Using different lengths of sentences to change pace and impact. 8 Use of dialogue and proper punctuation of this! Dialogue as a driver of a narrative. Examples of idiom usage in dialogue. 9 Mood, Atmosphere and Drama in Creative writing – simple devices to change the feel of the piece. 10 Final assessment and feedback session. The best of each other’s writing!
