Service Description

Phase 3: It is a 1-to-3 course. The main focus of each course is building comprehension skills, building understanding of English literature in various forms and learning how to answer a variety of different questions. It will focus primarily on reading and understanding a variety of literature, selecting ideas and information from the text and presenting it in a variety of forms. The course includes areas designed to build a student’s confidence, ways to improve their comprehension skills in all areas and lots of hints and tips for how to boost their mark in an exam situation. We also factor in past papers from a variety of well-known independent schools to prepare the students for the range of exams that they may take. Student to complete Whitgift 10+ Sample Material for Paper 2, Questions 1, 2, 3 in advance. 1 Punctuation, Syntax, Vocabulary and Grammar Usage Explain the different types of questions that could be asked. Homework: Complete Whitgift 10+ Sample Material for Paper 2, Questions 4,5 2 Starting to Analyse An introduction to the types of analytical, information retrieval and summative questions. HW: Complete PIRA Questions Q1-18 3. Analysing Prose Discuss how to approach a prose text, what to look for, etc HW: Complete PIRA Questions 19-32 4. Analysing Poetry Discuss poetry with the student. Go over basic poetry features and structure. HW: Complete Trinity Croydon Questions 1-5 5. Selecting Evidence Make sure they understand the difference between writing in their own words and selecting evidence from the text. HW: Complete Trinity Croydon Questions 6-9 6. Writing in Your Own Words Make clear the difference between selecting evidence and writing in your own words, which words need to be changed for synonyms, etc HW: Complete Emanuel School Section A 7. Effects of language / Longer and more detailed answers Discuss when questions are worth more marks, how much to write for these, whether to include evidence, how many points to make, etc. Discuss what the question means when it asks for EFFECTS. HW: PLAN Emanuel School Section B 8. Recreative Writing Discuss how they selected ideas from the text for their answers and discuss possible points with them. HW: Complete The Perse School Question 1-8 9. Detailed Explanations Focus on writing detailed explanations. HW: PLAN The Perse School Question 9-11 10 Recreative Writing 2 Discuss timings and questions, how much time they have to do each one. Go over recreative writing
