Service Description
Phase 2: It is a 1-to-3 course. Stage two of this course will focus on more of the kind of questions that come up in 13+ entrance tests and exams. Each class will focus on one or two skills and questions. We will cover all the major skills (using sentence variety, using the senses, using details, structuring arguments, being accurate) and will look at a range of question types: picture questions, story writing, persuasive writing, essays, speeches, letters, and descriptions of people and places. Homework after each session is to complete one of the tasks looked at in class. Students should check for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors. Accurate grammar and expression constitute 50% of the final mark. Lesson 1: Personal writing and description Skills: descriptive writing and 'carrying on a story.' Lesson 2: Writing a speech Skills: how to write a speech, planning an answer and giving an opinion. Lesson 3: Writing a magazine article and giving an opinion Skill: how to balance an argument. Lesson 4: Write a persuasive essay Skills: writing a letter; using informal language; writing to persuade. Lesson 5: Describing objects and rooms. Skill: exploring memories and feelings Lesson 6: Varying your sentences. Using ISPACED and SHAMPOO techniques to add interest to your writing. Lesson 7: Using techniques to turn a picture into a story Skills: planning and structuring; giving details and variety to make a story interesting. Lesson 8: Describing people: "Describe a person you know and like in as much detail as possible." Skills: describing the face, body, clothes and character. Using anecdotes or stories to make a description interesting. Lesson 9: Describing people (Part 2) Skills: descriptive and discursive personal writing. Using details and memories. Lesson 10: Arguing against a statement Skills: writing an argument clearly and effectively
