Service Description

Phase 1: It is a 1-to-3 course. Descriptive Writing The main focus of each course is learning how to write fluently and effectively in English with varied sentence structure, ambitious vocabulary and a variety of figurative language. Our courses for the younger students will focus primarily on story telling and writing descriptions and gradually increase in challenge and range of tasks until the students are working on descriptive, narrative, persuasive, discursive and informative writing towards GCSE-level. Each course includes areas designed to build a student’s confidence, ways to improve their writing in terms of sentence structure, vocabulary and figurative language, and lots of hints and tips for how to boost their mark in an exam situation. We also factor in past papers from a variety of well-known independent schools to prepare the students for the range of exams that they may take. 1 Introduction: What is Creative Writing? In this lesson, the students are asked to think about what it means to write "creatively". What is the difference between "Creative Writing" and other kinds of writing? 2 Adjectives The first of our CORE TECHNIQUES. We consider the importance of SYNONYMS & ANTONYMS, and learn some interesting ways of using Adjectives, including the RULE OF THREE, and COMPOUND ADJECTIVES. 3 The 5 Senses The second CORE TECHNIQUE involves writing with ALL FIVE of the SENSES: not only SIGHT, but SMELL, TOUCH, SOUND, and even TASTE! 4 Writing Sound We FOCUS on 1 of the 5 SENSES: SOUND. The students think carefully about the importance of Writing Sound, using specific techniques including -ING WORDS, ONOMATOPOEIA, and ALLITERATION. 5 Figurative Language The third set of CORE TECHNIQUES covers the basics of Figurative Language: SIMILE, METAPHOR, and PERSONIFICATION. 6 Using a Variety We read some extracts from famous novels and analyse the success of the authors' use of a VARIETY of Literary Devices and Writing Techniques. 7 MICRO & MACRO An important lesson about STRUCTURE, the students are introduced to the concept of MACROSCOPIC & MICROSCOPIC WRITING. 8 Sentence Starters & Punctuation 10 different ways of STARTING A SENTENCE and cover several important PUNCTUATION MARKS. 9 Mood & Atmosphere Discussion of GENRE and the importance of using a specific LEXICON. 10 Describing Characters OUTSIDE & INSIDE
